Hiking Gear

Now that the weather is getting warmer, I thought I’d share some of my favorite gear for summer hiking.

First off, my new go-to hat is the Arcteryx Calidum hat. It’s not just lightweight – it’s feather-light, so it’s comfortable to wear all day long without any discomfort.

When it comes to shirts, I prefer sunshirts over short-sleeve shirts because they provide sun protection for my arms and help keep me cool. Some of my favorite brands are the Patagonia Capilene sun hoodie, the REI Co-op Sahara shade hoodie, and the Backcountry Tahoe sun hoodie.

Even in the summer months, I prefer to hike in pants for added leg protection, especially since I live in the Northeast, where the terrain can be rocky and full of nettles. I sometimes wear convertible pants, like the REI Sahara pants or the Outdoor Voices Rectrek pants. Lately, my favorite hiking pants have been from Stio – they’re lightweight, comfortable, and hold up well.

My favorite socks for summer hikes are Smartwool, Darn Tough, and Farm to Feet. Each brand offers a lightweight option that’s perfect for warmer temperatures.

I rotate between the Hoka Anacapas and Arcteryx Aerios for footwear. The Hokas provide extra cushion and ankle support for longer hikes, while the Arcteryx shoes are great for shorter excursions or everyday wear.

Another essential item for me in the summer is my water reservoir. I typically only carry them when I know my water won’t freeze in my pack. My favorite brand is the Osprey Reservoir because its magnet feature attaches to your pack and doesn’t dangle or drip.

A few other items I can’t leave the house without during summer hikes are a bug net to keep pesky flies at bay and bug spray for added protection.

I have created a locker of my current staple pieces I use everyday.
